clear waters

Down a quiet Northwoods road...

Not far from the Wisconsin River...

...An artesian well flows, where thirsty passersby fill as many milk jugs and Gatorade bottles as they can manage. My family has driven past it every time we visit my grandparents. But I never remember stopping -- until Sunday.

Ian and I drove up and had a very pleasant visit. As we headed home, there it was. The spring. I'd stashed a few water bottles in the car for the drive, and now they were empty, so Ian suggested we stop to see what all the fuss was about. He hopped out and filled them up. Even through the plastic, I could feel how cool the water was, and when I took a gulp, I tasted nothing. In my humble opinion, that's simple, sweet perfection.

We're not sure when we'll visit Granny and Granddad next, but we're already stockpiling bottles.

Have you found a place like this?

I've always wanted to do that. I'm glad it is good. Let's hope for no protazoa or other unfriendly little critters.

30 hours later and feeling just fine!

However, the bacteria-laden water in Greendale is another story...

Growing up my family had a cottage in Ohio. Our water was from a well with the strong taste of minerals or whatever gives some well water it's distinctive flavor. The neighboring cottage however was lucky enough to have struck a natural spring. They had a little shed where inside the cold beautiful water always ran. They were also kind enough to leave the shed unlocked so us kids good go in and drink the good stuff. lovely!

There is an Artesian Spring in Big Bend just east of 164. People come from all over to stock up on this wonderful water. Although it's only 2 blocks from my parents house, I can only remember getting water from it a handful of times. Interestingly its on Mel Ellis' former property.
